Marshmallows Through the Ages

A Sticky Start in Ancient Egypt

The story of marshmallows begins in ancient Egypt, where the sap of the marshmallow plant was used to soothe sore throats and heal wounds. Only the pharaohs and gods were worthy of this delicacy. Fast forward a few centuries, and the French were whipping the sap with egg whites and sugar to create the fluffy treats we know today.

Marshmallows’ Cultural Significance

Over time, marshmallows became more than just a treat. They evolved into a cultural icon, representing togetherness and simple pleasures. From backyard bonfires to holiday hot chocolates, marshmallows are woven into various traditions worldwide. Their universal appeal lies in their versatility and ability to conjure nostalgia.

From Treat to Icon

Today, the marshmallow has transcended its humble beginnings. It’s a symbol of comfort and creativity, inspiring countless recipes and variations. Whether enjoyed on their own or as part of delightful creations, marshmallows continue to bring people together across cultures and generations.

Fun Ways to Enjoy Marshmallows

Classic S’mores Recipe

The quintessential campfire treat, s’mores are a delicious blend of toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers. To make the classic version, simply sandwich a perfectly toasted marshmallow between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate. The heat melts the chocolate into gooey perfection. For a twist, experiment with flavored chocolates or add a layer of peanut butter for extra decadence.

Creative Campfire Treats

Beyond traditional s’mores, get creative with campfire treats. Try making banana boats by stuffing a banana with marshmallows and chocolate chips, wrapping it in foil, and placing it over the fire. Or create marshmallow popcorn balls for a sweet and crunchy snack. These innovative ideas ensure your campfire experiences remain deliciously exciting.

Cereal Bars and Treats

Another popular way to enjoy marshmallows is in cereal bars and treats. The process is simple: melt butter, marshmallows, and your favorite cereal together, then spread the mixture into a pan to cool. You can add other ingredients like chocolate chips or candies for extra flavor and texture.

Marshmallow Milkshakes

Milkshakes are a classic summer treat that can be taken to the next level with the addition of toasted marshmallows. Simply blend vanilla ice cream, milk, and toasted marshmallows until smooth and creamy. Top it off with whipped cream and a sprinkle of crushed graham crackers for a s’mores-inspired milkshake.

Gourmet Marshmallow Flavors and Recipes

Why stick to plain when you can have gourmet? Marshmallows come in various flavors like vanilla bean, raspberry, and even salted caramel. These can be made at home with a bit of creativity. Use flavored extracts and food coloring to make your batch of unique marshmallows. Try dipping them in chocolate or rolling them in nuts for a gourmet touch.

Marshmallow Fondue Ideas

Host a marshmallow fondue party for a fun and interactive experience. Melt chocolate or caramel in a fondue pot and use skewers to dip marshmallows into the delicious pool. Pair with fruits, nuts, cakes, biscotti, or cookies for an exciting array of flavors and textures. Fondue brings a social element to marshmallow enjoyment, perfect for gatherings with family and friends.

Marshmallows into Everyday Recipes

Marshmallows aren’t just for sweets. Add them to everyday recipes to bring a hint of sweetness. Consider mixing them into cereal, layering them inside peanut butter sandwiches, topping off sweet potatoes, or incorporating them into a fruit salad. The versatility of marshmallows allows them to enhance various dishes, adding a playful twist to your meals.

Creating the Perfect Toasted Marshmallow

Achieving the perfect toast requires some technique. For a classic golden brown, hold the marshmallow over the flame, slowly rotating it. If you prefer a charred exterior, place it closer to the fire for a quick roast. Use a metal skewer for safety and control during roasting.

Patience is key! Allow your marshmallow to toast gradually, ensuring it heats through without burning. If using a stovetop or oven, keep a close eye on the marshmallow’s color. Experiment with different heat sources to find your perfect toasting method, whether you’re using an open flame or a stovetop burner.

Conclusion

National Toasted Marshmallow Day is a celebration of sweetness, creativity, and togetherness. As you explore the history, recipes, and techniques, remember that the heart of this day lies in enjoying marshmallows in whatever form you choose. Invite family and friends to join in the festivities, try new recipes, and share your creations with fellow marshmallow lovers. This year, let’s make every day a little sweeter with the magic of marshmallows!

Seasonal Produce for Summer-Inspired Catering

One of the easiest and most effective ways to personalize your summer catering is through seasonal produce. Incorporating fresh, local ingredients into your menu can make a big difference in taste as well as presentation. Whether you go with classic favorites like juicy summer tomatoes or opt for something more exotic like dragon fruit, using seasonal ingredients can instantly bring your menu to the next level.

Not only does this elevate the flavor of your dishes, but it also adds a unique touch and reflects the seasonality of summer. Summer produce is also often more affordable than out-of-season items, making it easier to work into any budgeting plan.

Savory Barbecue and Grilled Meats

Nothing says summer like the smoky aroma of grilled meats! Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue or a more formal gathering, incorporating some delicious grilled items into your catering menu will be sure to please. From succulent chicken wings to juicy steaks, there are plenty of options for creating an unforgettable summer feast.

When it comes to grilling, always opt for high-quality cuts of meat. This will ensure that your dishes are flavorful and tender. You can even add a touch of originality by marinating the meat in unique sauces or rubs. For vegetarians and vegans, grilled vegetables like zucchini, onions, and bell peppers provide a tasty alternative to traditional barbecue fare.

A summer party wouldn’t be complete without some cool and refreshing beverages. From classic favorites like lemonade and sweet iced tea to creative concoctions like fruity sangrias and champagne bellinis, the possibilities are endless. If you’re looking for something special, why not set up a specialty drink station at your event? This allows guests to customize their drinks by adding their own mix-ins like mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, citrus wedges, cucumber slices, or even flavored syrups.

You can also offer a selection of festive mocktails for those who don’t want to indulge in alcohol. For something unique and summery, try blending watermelon with some fresh lime juice and soda water for a delicious and healthy drink. Whatever you choose, make sure there is plenty of ice on hand to keep your drinks cold throughout the party.

Start by chopping the eggs into small pieces and adding them to a bowl. Next, add some of your other favorite ingredients such as diced onion, bell pepper, celery, olives, pickles, or any other vegetables you have on hand. Finally mix everything together with mayonnaise or yogurt until it’s creamy and delicious! Spoon the egg salad onto buttery rolls, croissants, bagels, or toast for an easy sandwich that everyone will love.

Casseroles

If you still have a lot of food left over after Easter dinner, why not make a casserole out of it? This is a great way to use up all those extra veggies in one dish. Simply layer cooked vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and green beans on the bottom of a baking dish. Top with cooked meat such as ham or turkey before adding a creamy sauce like condensed cream of mushroom soup over everything. Finish by sprinkling some cheese on top, if desired, before baking in the oven until hot and bubbly. You can also add cooked rice to the casserole for an even heartier meal!

Quiche

Finally, you can use all those leftover Easter eggs to make a delicious quiche. Start by preheating your oven and greasing a pie dish. Whisk together eggs and milk in a large bowl before stirring in any other ingredients that you have on hand such as cooked vegetables or meats. Pour the mixture into the prepared pie dish before baking for about 30 minutes or until the quiche is golden brown and set. Slice it up and enjoy!

Desserts

Easter desserts like cakes, pies, and other sweet treats are surprisingly easy to repurpose for later in the week. Consider transforming those pies into individual tartlets or cutting cake into cubes that can be reassembled with fresh fruit and cream for trifles. Create a quick pudding from cooked cake crumbs and leftover frosting. Layer slices of cake with whipped cream and seasonal fruits. If you still have some desserts left after all that, simply freeze them tightly wrapped in airtight bags and you’ll have a handy snack or light dessert whenever needed! Don’t forget – everything tastes good as a milkshake! Just add ice cream and milk to create your unique masterpiece.

Get Creative With Your Leftovers From Easter!

These are just a few of the many creative ways you can transform your Easter dinner leftovers into delicious meals. So don’t let those extra eggs, entrees, and veggies go to waste – get creative in the kitchen and whip up an amazing dish! Bon appétit!

Greek-Style Lemon and Feta Meatballs Recipe

Traditional Greek meatballs are called Keftedes. These delicious Grecian crudites are compatible with many pairings. If you want to stick with Greek cuisine, serve your meatballs with sides like Mediterranean salad, lemon orzo, fusilli pasta, toasted pita, hummus, tabbouleh, baba ghanoush, tomato and cucumber salad, french fries, and tzatziki sauce.

This modern take on the classic keftedes recipe will yield around 36 two-inch meatballs. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What You Will Need to Make the Meatballs:

❏ 2 Pounds Ground Lamb
❏ 3 Tablespoons of Water
❏ 1 Large Egg
❏ 1 1/4 Cup Breadcrumbs
❏ 1/2 Cup Crumbled Feta Cheese
❏ 3/4 Teaspoons of Table Salt
❏ 2 Garlic Cloves – Minced
❏ 3 Tablespoons of Chopped Parsley
❏ 2 Tablespoons of Tomato Paste
❏ 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
❏ Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes
❏ 1/2 of a Lemon for Zest

What You’ll Need to Make the Sauce:

❏ 1 Medium Yellow Onion – Finely Chopped
❏ 1 Garlic Clove – Minced
❏ 1/2 cup of Red Wine or Dry Vermouth (optional)
❏ 1 Can of Crushed Tomatoes – 28 Oz.
❏ 1 Teaspoon of Dried Oregano
❏ 1 Teaspoon Table Salt
❏ 1/3 Cup of Kalamata Olives – Pitted and Chopped
❏ Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes
❏ 1/2 of a Lemon for Zest
❏ Juice of 1 Lemon
❏ 1 Tablespoon Thinly Sliced Mint Leaves – Plus Additional for Garnish
❏ 2 Tablespoons Roughly Chopped Parsley – Plus Additional for Garnish
❏ 1/4 Cup Crumbled Feta for Garnish

Cooking Directions

Start by preparing the meatballs. With the exception of the oil, combine all ingredients into a large mixing bowl.

Wet your hands and begin forming 2-inch meatballs. Place them on a flat surface covered in wax or parchment paper.

Preheat your skillet to medium heat. Add in olive oil and then place your meatballs in the pan. Brown each side for a couple of minutes. Do not worry about cooking them all the way through.

Note: It is normal for meatballs to stick to the pan. This is fine, and in fact, enhances the flavor of the sauce you will be preparing soon!

Once browned on all sides, drain your meatballs on a plate lined with paper towels.

Directions for Sauce

Drain the fat from the skillet, leaving in at least 1 teaspoon for further cooking. Then set your skillet to medium heat.

Once hot, add in your garlic and onion and allow them to cook down for a few minutes.

Note: Now is the time to add in your wine or vermouth if you like. Use this liquid to scrape up the bits of meat stuck to the pan.

Next, add in the tomatoes, salt, oregano, pepper flakes, olives, lemon zest, mint, and parsley. Bring everything to a simmer.

Once simmering, add the meatballs to your pan and cover it with a lid. Cook on a low simmer for 20 to 25 minutes.

Garnish with the juice of 1 full lemon, thinly sliced mint leaves, roughly chopped parsley, and crumbled feta.
